Advancing Kanban Training Facilitation Skills with Okaloa Flowlab | 2-day training for AKT

Okaloa Flowlab is a new, experiential, way of teaching and coaching 21st century business agility that involves the entire organization. In a philosophy of “practice before theory”, it allows participants to experience old and new (agile) ways of organizing work through simulations. By not being restricted to a particular type of work it speaks to all functions (HR, Marketing, IT, …); by including a whole range of simulations (team, cross-team, value-stream, portfolio, …) it speaks to all levels of the organization.

 

While Okaloa Flowlab is used by many to teach agile thinking in general, it is especially powerful for teaching Kanban. Kanban trainers and coaches world-wide have been using Okaloa Flowlab simulations to experientially teach Kanban and The Kanban Method. The “Advancing Kanban training facilitation skills with Okaloa Flowlab” course is designed for Accredited Kanban Trainers (AKT) that want to learn how to make the difference with an experiential learning style that is founded on social psychology and systems thinking.

 

The training covers three simulations that are specifically well suited to teach KMP I & II. True to its own philosophy, the training allows the participants to experience the simulations before going into the double loop learning theory and the social intuitionist model that underlies the simulations. It allows participant to experience before learning how to facilitate increasingly sophisticated simulations.

 

Starting at the team level, the Team Flow simulation is used to demonstrate how to use simulation to teach flow thinking. Participants go through the experience of collaborative improvement with WIP limits and collaboration policies. While doing so, participants experience the difference between resource and flow efficiency mindsets, as well as different levels of thinking (linear causality, causal loops, complexity) that either inhibit or support evolutionary change.

 

We continue with a Workflow simulation that shows what Kanban really is about – differentiating between proto-kanban and Kanban as well as teaching how to deal with back-flow. Through the concept of the knowledge discovery process, the workflow simulation also lays the foundation for differentiating upstream from downstream Kanban (without yet teaching the details of upstream Kanban).

 

The final simulation is a Multi-team simulation that shows how Kanban can scale across an organization. It is used to teach the fundamentals of bottleneck thinking (ref. theory of constraints) and advanced Kanban systems that use capacity tokens (representing capacity

with WIP) to shape demand and improve delivery. Participants experience change at scale.

Facilitator Bio's 

Patrick Steyaert of Okaloa, a principal lean agile coach with extensive experience in practicing Kanban, will be your workshop facilitator. Patrick received a Brickell Key Award in 2015 as a recognition for his contributions to the Kanban community. Patrick is one of the first, and only Belgian, Lean Kanban University accredited trainers. He is also a regular speaker at Kanban and agile conferences.
