For many organizations execution and innovation are considered incompatible. These organizations (whether incumbent, start-up, or growth organization) tend to struggle in the current hyper-competitive market space. Other organizations are cautiously seeking a balance between execution and innovation or are developing a balanced dual mode operating system (e.g. bi-modal organization). Few organizations find themselves in a state of hyper-innovation where execution and innovation are in a cycle of mutual reinforcement.

This 1-day intensive workshop will immerse participants in the hyper-innovation experience with Kanban. They will learn how hyper-innovation is arrived at, not just by good fortune or cultural heritage (e.g. like growth organizations that inherited a start-up culture) but that it is a capability that can (and should) be developed and sustained at different levels in the organization.

In the workshop we will start with execution, as it is most familiar to many. Through increasingly complex simulations we will explore how an execution process is innovated. While doing so we will illustrate core hyper-innovation processes and concepts such as:

  • end-to-end flow including upstream discovery using options thinking

  • validated learning with PDCA in the context of hypothesis-driven change

  • giving direction with OODA using integrative thinking.

Participants will learn how to use and operate the supporting Discovery Kanban systems such as: upstream, decision-making and experiment Kanban. Participants will experience how these concepts and Discovery Kanban systems naturally extend into a broader set of innovations; moving from efficiency innovation to technology innovation, sustaining product innovation (ref. Lean UX) and finally disruptive business model innovation (ref. Lean start-up). We will close the workshop with a canvas that helps to manage the two critical opposing forces of path dependence and path creation when building on execution and innovation.

The workshop is targeted at both experienced Kanban practitioners that want to broaden their experience domain as well as managers that want to experience how execution and innovation can build on each other.
